Credit Card Processing

Credit Card Processing

These days, fewer and fewer people are paying with cash, and people are often discouraged from “cash only” establishments. Most customers will pass up the hassle of locating an ATM for their bank or braving outragous ATM fees by choosing a company that accepts credit cards instead. More and more merchants are turning to credit card processing options to make things easier on their patrons to retain more customer loyalty.

If you’re one of the many companies looking to take advantage of a credit card processing system, then you may be feeling a little overwhelmed. There are many processing services and machines to choose from and finding the right option can be difficult. The seemingly tedious process of selecting and setting up a processing service is one of the main reasons many companies avoid credit card processing altogether. However, by getting to know the basics and learning about all of your options, you’ll be able to choose the most resourceful and economical solution for your business.

Finding the Right Service

When you begin your search for the right credit card processing service, keep in mind that this is a competitive market and the rates you find should be reflective of the market. In other words, there is no reason to settle for an expensive processing service when you can locate another service that provides all of the same benefits and features for a fraction of the price. While most companies maintain low prices to keep merchants interested, some providers attempt to gouge prices. Be aware that, just as with any other investment for your company, you want to choose the highest quality product for the lowest price.

That being said, choosing the cheapest products and systems is not always the best way to save money. The old adage “you get what you pay for” rings true, even when it comes to a credit card processing. While you should definitely be concerned with costs, you should also make sure that having a quality service is at the top of your priroity list. The good news is that it is possible to have the best of both worlds, but it takes a little research and price comparing.

Types of Equipment

The type of credit card processing equipment you choose will greatly depend upon the type of credit card transactions you’ll be doing, the size of your company and the budget you have to spend on a product. In order to save the most money possible, while also keeping your customers happy, take a few minutes to learn about all of the equipment options before you make a decision. Firstly, however, you need to decide whether or not you need a printer on your device. Remember that there are wireless options for both terminals with printers and terminals without.

The most common retail credit card processing terminal is one that has a printer. These types of systems are great because they offer a customer receipt and process credit cards at the same time. The convenience of having an attached printer does come with a heavier price, but these machines can still be purchased for only a few hundred dollars per terminal. Printers can be either basic integrated compact or thermal. If you choose a thermal printer, you won’t have to worry about the cost of ink cartridges. Pinpads can also be included on these devices for customers who prefer to use a debit card.

Non-printer credit card processing terminals are also common, but are used more for companies that perform mail-in, phone orders and other credit card payment transactions for which a customer does not need a receipt immediately. Companies that hire out contractors, such as electrical and landscaping professionals, generally use this type of processing equipment because it allows maximum mobility with a smaller price tag. These units can be found for just a couple hundred dollars per terminal.

Making a Decision

Most people prefer to use their credit or debit card because it helps them keep better track of their money. Since most banks and card issuers offer online services and free account balance inquiries, taking out cash from an ATM is not always the most convenient way to buy. Thus, keeping up with new technology is important for all merchants.

Remember that having a processing service that accepts all types of credit and debit cards not only makes purchasing more convenient for your customers, but it also gives you an edge over a merchant that refuses certain card types. Having reliable, fast and convenient processing equipment makes a big difference in customer experience. By knowing the basics of credit card processing services and equipment, you’re much more likely to make a choice that will provide a mutually beneficial experience for both your company and your customers.
